Den Calvijnischen Koffelpot

This Dutch broadside combines woodcut text and satirical verse to mock the Protestant defeat at the Battle of White Mountain (1620), which ended the Palatinate's brief Bohemian reign. The 'Calvinist Pot' title ridicules Frederick V and his religious allies through folk-theater dialogue between stock characters—a tradition rooted in popular prints and street performance. Such illustrated broadsides, combining crude woodcuts with vernacular satire, were mass-produced political weapons in early modern Europe. They descend from earlier German *Flugblätter* and anticipate the graphic satire of Hogarth and Gillray. Here, religious mockery and political defeat merge in rough comedy aimed at ordinary readers, establishing the coarse, allegorical humor that would evolve into modern cartooning's blend of image and invective.
