Den Franssen al Gemist (The French Missed)

This Dutch etching depicts French diplomatic efforts during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. The large central scene shows a chaotic alchemical workshop where French figures attempt to sabotage peace negotiations, their schemes literally exploding. The composition—with a main narrative surrounded by smaller explanatory panels—derives from the Northern European *Bilderbogen* tradition of satirical picture-sheets that combined text and image to target political rivals. The etching technique allowed rapid, cheap reproduction and mass distribution. This print exemplifies how graphic satire functioned as political propaganda in the seventeenth century, a direct ancestor to nineteenth-century caricature by Gillray and Rowlandson, and ultimately to modern editorial cartooning and comics.
