The Funeral Procession of the Orange Sash at Utrecht
This hand-colored engraving commemorates a public funeral ceremony held in Utrecht following the Patriot Revolution, when Orange loyalists were purged from power. The print depicts a solemn procession with military and civic figures, a coffin draped with orange regalia, and mourning crowds before the city walls. The accompanying Dutch verses mock Orange support and celebrate the Patriot victory, turning a political defeat into satirical spectacle. As a colored engraving with narrative text, this work exemplifies the Dutch tradition of political prints—combining visual commentary with poetry to shape public opinion. Such image-and-verse broadsides influenced the later European caricature tradition, establishing visual satire as a weapon of popular political discourse.
