Apollo Library: A Satire on London Publishing
· 1819

This hand-colored etching depicts Thomas Tegg's Apollo Library bookshop, where a comet crashes through the street scattering crowds below. The catastrophe satirizes the flood of cheaply printed, sensational literature that London publishers like Tegg distributed to working-class readers. A figure in green observes the chaos. The print exemplifies early-19th-century satirical tradition: etched outlines colored by hand, exaggerated figures, and urban spectacle. Such graphic satires by artists following Gillray and Rowlandson shaped visual humor's evolution from broadsides toward illustrated periodicals and eventually comic strips.
