Le Tirage (The Pickpocketing)
This lithograph depicts a crowded street scene where well-dressed bourgeois men and women jostle near a shop window while pickpockets work the crowd. The print satirizes urban crime and the vulnerability of fashionable society to theft in public spaces. Created in the tradition of French social satire—following Hogarth's narrative scenes and Rowlandson's crowded compositions—the work employs caricature to expose class tensions and criminal behavior. The lithographic medium allowed rapid, cheap production for popular consumption. Such prints mocked the pretensions and dangers of modern city life, contributing to a visual language of social commentary that would influence later comic illustration and sequential narrative art.
