Three Hats of Camille Roger
· 1921

This color woodcut or stencil print depicts three fashionable hats displayed on female figures from behind, rendered in the elegant, simplified forms of Art Deco design. The composition—three views of millinery by designer Camille Roger—descends from centuries of fashion satire and consumer caricature. Since Hogarth and Gillray, printmakers have mocked and marketed style through exaggerated headwear, dress, and social pretension. By the early twentieth century, such imagery had evolved into illustrated fashion commentary and advertising. Here, the bold outlines, flat color planes, and graphic reduction characteristic of modernist woodcut technique serve both artistic and commercial purposes, mediating between fine art print traditions and the emerging mass-market worlds of fashion journalism and comic illustration.
