Bonjour! Chapeau, de Camille Roger
This hand-colored pochoir print depicts a fashionable woman in profile, her face rendered with sharp linear hatching in the Art Deco style. She wears an elaborate black ensemble trimmed with blue beads and a sculptural hat, positioned against geometric planes of ochre and cream. The work exemplifies the fashion illustration tradition that evolved from 18th-century caricature—tracing a line from Hogarth and Gillray through Daumier to early-20th-century commercial art. Rather than political satire, it targets aesthetic pretension through exaggeration of fashion extremes, particularly the fashionable hat. The pochoir technique, stencil-based color printing, allowed rapid production of luxury fashion plates for elite audiences. By 1921, such illustrations occupied the space between fine art printmaking and commercial design where comic illustration would soon develop.
