Fashion Designs by Lanvin and Beer
· 1920

This hand-colored lithograph from *Gazette du Bon Ton*, the luxury fashion journal, presents four women's coats and ensembles by designers Lanvin and Beer. The figure at far left wears a dark coat with fur collar and striking black feathered hat; the second model displays a white coat with fur trim and cloche hat; the third, a dark draped gown with decorative embroidery; the fourth, a dark wool coat with fur cuffs and pointed hat. The elegant pen-and-ink line work, typical of early twentieth-century fashion illustration, captures the silhouettes and details prized by haute couture's elite clientele. Fashion journalism of this period employed caricatured facial features and elongated proportions descending from nineteenth-century satirical traditions.
