Spotprent op de terugtocht van Napoleon uit Rusland
This copper engraving mocks Napoleon's disastrous Russian retreat, showing soldiers plundering, freezing, and collapsing amid winter conditions while officers gesture helplessly. The print descends from Northern European satirical traditions—anticipating the mordant political graphics of Gillray and Rowlandson that flooded print markets during the Napoleonic Wars. Such sheets circulated widely as crude, violent commentary on military failure, targeting both Napoleon's ambitions and the soldiers' suffering with equal scorn. The dense composition, labeled figures, and moral chaos reflect the conventions of popular satirical prints that preceded modern comic strips: sequential narrative, exaggerated bodies, and social types arranged to expose folly and corruption.
