Monk with Curved Sword and Dagger
· 1724

This engraving depicts a figure in monastic robes armed with curved sword and dagger, a composition that reflects the anti-clerical satire tradition of early 18th-century European print culture. The figure combines religious habit with weapons of violence, embodying a common critique of ecclesiastical hypocrisy and corruption circulating among Protestant and secular audiences. The fine hatching technique and formal framing show the influence of Northern European engraving traditions that preceded Hogarth and Gillray. Such prints—part of a broader culture of religious and political caricature—established visual conventions for satirizing institutional power that would persist through the 19th century and eventually inform the visual language of early comic strips and caricature journalism.
