Explanation of the First Satirical Print on English Losses in the Struggle with America
This Dutch broadside explains a satirical print mocking British military defeats during the American Revolution. The text identifies specific losses: the fall of Ticonderoga, the Philadelphia campaign, and the British surrender at Saratoga. Such printed explanations accompanied political engravings throughout Europe, guiding viewers through layers of visual symbolism and topical reference. Dutch publishers circulated these works widely, offering commentary on foreign conflicts for a literate public. This explanatory format—linking image to text—became central to European satirical traditions from Hogarth onward, establishing a model later adapted by newspapers, periodicals, and eventually comic publications that combined word and picture to shape political opinion.
