Hebzucht probeert Fortuna in te halen (Greed Attempts to Overtake Fortune)

This Dutch engraving depicts a crowded beach scene where numerous figures engage in various acts of vice and folly—gambling, theft, deception, and debauchery—while pursuing Fortune, represented by the winged figure at center. The allegorical composition, rendered in fine line engraving, belongs to the Northern European moral satire tradition that preceded modern caricature. Rather than targeting individual politicians or public figures, such prints offered generalized social commentary on human weakness and greed. The print's dense, theatrical composition and moralistic intent influenced later picture-sheets and broadside traditions.
