Het Geldersche Zwyn (The Gelderland Pig)
· 1786

This hand-colored etching and engraving mocks Dutch political leadership during the tumultuous 1780s. A pig with a human head feeds from an overflowing trough marked with state revenues, while Dutch verse below questions whether the nation's resources serve the public good or private interests. The grotesque fusion of animal and human—a technique inherited from sixteenth-century Netherlandish tradition and perfected by Hogarth and Gillray—renders the target ridiculous and contemptible. Published amid constitutional crisis and civil conflict in the Dutch Republic, the print exemplifies how political satire, through crude physiognomy and crude humor, mobilized public opinion before mass media. Such images form a direct lineage to modern editorial cartooning and comic illustration.
