Dutch University Examination Satire
This Dutch lithograph mocks the state examination required for university admission, a scene of institutional chaos. At center, figures balance precariously on scales of justice while smoke billows from an overturned cauldron above. Left, a student struggles with his studies; right, a grand building represents the university itself. Below, crowds of applicants and observers mill about in disorder. The print belongs to the European tradition of political and social satire extending from Hogarth through Gillray and Rowlandson into the nineteenth century. Such satirical prints, combining dense illustration with humor and social critique, established visual conventions that would flow into modern comic strips and graphic narratives—the layered composition, exaggerated figures, and narrative spread across a single sheet all anticipate comics' formal language.
