Student Life: A Leidse Studentenalmanak Print
· 1865

This wood-engraved satirical sheet from a Dutch student almanac maps the comic chaos of university life in overlapping vignettes, each framed by decorative foliage. Young men fence, brawl, seduce, gamble, and carousing through dormitories and taverns while authority figures—professors and landlords—look on in exasperation. The composition echoes the picture-sheet tradition of German Bilderbogen and the sequential narrative panels of Hogarth and Rowlandson, arranging episodic mischief across a single page. Academic pranks and sexual escapades became stock subjects for student almanacs, allowing young readers to recognize themselves in printed form. The engraver's fine lines capture both the genteel architectural settings and the undignified scramble of youthful excess, creating comedy through contrast between institution and impulse.
