Allegorical Print with Ecclesiastical Medallions
· 1862

This hand-colored lithograph presents a winged allegorical figure holding two circular medallions depicting religious scenes, with Latin inscriptions and Dutch text reading "Vooruitgang en Vaskheid van Brussel" (Progress and Constancy of Brussels). The bearded patriarch figure and classical imagery suggest satire on institutional or ecclesiastical authority. The work exemplifies the tradition of Dutch student almanac prints—commercial satirical graphics that inherited methods from Gillray and Daumier. Such prints, distributed through almanacs and periodicals, deployed allegorical figures, heraldic forms, and layered classical references to comment on contemporary politics, religion, and social change. The lithographic medium allowed rapid, affordable production for a growing urban audience, establishing visual satire as popular entertainment preceding the comic strip's emergence.
