This wood engraving satirizes student life in the Netherlands through a precariously stacked composition of young men in academic dress, their uniforms and insignia marking rival fraternities. The upper level shows magistrates or judges overseeing chaos below, where students wield instruments, flags, and weapons in mock-martial disorder. Surrounding vignettes—tankards, musical instruments, academic regalia—mock student pretensions and drinking culture. The print belongs to the German and Dutch *Bilderbogen* tradition of layered, densely detailed social satire that influenced later newspaper comics and caricature. Its hierarchical structure parodies both institutional authority and youthful disorder, using physiognomy and costume to distinguish social ranks and student types.
