Het Comité van Financiër (The Finance Committee)
This hand-colored etching satirizes the Dutch Finance Committee during the revolutionary period, depicting officials as incompetent or corrupt figures gathered around a table labeled 'Recepten' (Recipes). The composition mocks financial mismanagement through grotesque caricature—exaggerated features, bloated bodies, and theatrical gestures typical of late-18th-century satire. The print descends from Hogarth's narrative sequences and Gillray's political ridicule, employing caricature as a weapon against authority. Such prints circulated widely in the Netherlands during political upheaval, reaching common readers through affordable reproduction. The style influenced subsequent political cartooning traditions across Europe, establishing visual language—exaggeration, symbolic props, emblematic figures—that would flow into modern comic art.
