Het Comité van Noodlijdenden (The Committee for the Distressed)
This hand-colored etching depicts a chaotic scene of bureaucratic ineptitude during the Dutch Republic's economic crisis. A grossly obese committeeman sits at the center of a crowded table laden with food and drink, while skeletal figures—representing the poor—gesture in desperation. The satire targets relief committees that allegedly enriched themselves while citizens starved. The print exemplifies 18th-century political caricature's tradition of exposing official corruption through exaggerated physiology and crowded composition. Like Gillray and Rowlandson's work, it weaponized grotesque portraiture and social observation to mock the powerful. The corpulent official and starving masses employ class-based visual contrast that became foundational to modern editorial cartooning and sequential art's moral language.
