Untitled Ornithological Study
This handwritten catalog page documents a bird specimen with systematic nomenclature and field notes. The format reflects early twentieth-century naturalist practice: a ledger layout listing specimen number, scientific name, collection details, and physical measurements. While ornithological records lack the overt political messaging of Gillray or Daumier's caricatures, they share the era's impulse to taxonomize and classify—to render observable reality through standardized systems. The careful notation and marginal annotations echo the methodical observation underlying both scientific illustration and the satirical print tradition, where exaggeration and precision serve different ends: one to document nature, the other to expose human folly and vice.
