A gentleman in top hat and coat addresses a uniformed military officer, declining to offer him a drink while noting his sword—a witty visual pun suggesting the officer's sobriety. Rendered in pen line with minimal shading, this French satirical sketch exemplifies the tradition of political and social caricature that descended from Gillray and Rowlandson through Daumier and into the illustrated periodical press of the nineteenth century. The economical draftsmanship and reliance on gesture, uniform detail, and verbal wit mark the vocabulary from which modern comic strips and comic books evolved, where character and humor emerge through concise visual shorthand rather than elaborate background or modeling.
