The Four Elements
· 1792

This hand-colored etching or engraving presents the classical four elements through grotesque human figures—a hunched miser clutching coins (Earth), a jovial cook amid smoke and steam (Air), a thin gentleman in ruins with a cane (Fire), and a figure against stonework (Water). Each caricature exaggerates physiognomy and costume in the tradition of Gillray and Rowlandson. The print exemplifies late-18th-century satirical prints that taught moral and natural philosophy through comic distortion. It targets universal human types and vices, anticipating how caricature and sequential imagery would form the visual language of modern comics.
