Campanula lasiocarpa Cham. (Alpine Bellflower)

This herbarium sheet preserves two dried specimens of *Campanula lasiocarpa*, the alpine bellflower, collected in 1836 from what the label identifies as Unalashka (Unalaska, in the Aleutian Islands). The mounted plants retain withered basal rosettes and a solitary bell-shaped flower on each slender stem. Handwritten annotations in period ink identify the species and its synonym *C. lasiocarpa* Cham., referencing Adelbert von Chamisso, the naturalist-poet who described Aleutian flora during the 1815–1818 Rurik voyage. Pressed botanical specimens like these were primary scientific currency before photographic reproduction, forming the physical archive from which illustrated flora atlases — themselves ancestors of sequential printed image-culture — were produced.
