Caricature of A.F. de Savornin Lohman
Hahn, Albert · 1905

Albert Hahn's wood engraving depicts the Dutch politician A.F. de Savornin Lohman amid a chaotic scene of writhing figures and dark architectural forms. The print employs stark black-and-white contrast punctuated by deep red, characteristic of early 20th-century German Expressionist printmaking. Hahn captures his subject within a densely layered composition where distorted human bodies and ornamental details merge into psychological turmoil. This work descends from the European caricature tradition of Gillray and Daumier, translating political critique into visual drama through exaggeration and symbolic distortion. The wood engraving technique, favored by Dutch and German artists, allowed fine linear detail and bold contrasts suited to both satirical and social commentary, establishing visual conventions that would inform early comic art and editorial cartooning.
