Musical Staff with Figured Notation
This page from a 19th-century anthology of seventeenth-century humor presents musical notation repurposed for satirical effect. The figured bass and melodic lines suggest a composition whose actual subject—revealed through clever typographic substitution or contextual performance—mocked political figures, social pretenders, or moral failings of the era. Such visual puns exploited the dual literacy of educated audiences in both music and political allegory. This merging of musical and textual satire exemplifies the inventive print culture from which graphic satire traditions evolved, predating the caricature conventions of Hogarth and Gillray by generations. The anthology itself, compiled in the 1880s, documents how earlier humor survives through careful collection and republication.
