Musical Notation from Seventeenth-Century Satirical Song
· 17th century (reproduced 1883)

This musical score represents a song fragment titled 'Shall I bye beyond thee? or, Linde me beyond thee,' part of a collection documenting England's robust tradition of printed satire and popular humor. The three staves show melody lines typical of broadside ballads—cheap, mass-produced sheets that combined music with political commentary and social ridicule. Such songs reached wide audiences across classes, their catchy tunes carrying barbed lyrics about public figures and scandals. This tradition of visual and musical satire, flourishing from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries alongside prints by Gillray and Rowlandson, established the framework for modern comic storytelling: exaggerated character, accessible format, topical bite, and the marriage of image with text to amplify social criticism.
