Ils m'ont refusé ça… les ignares!!

Honoré Daumier's lithograph — his signature medium, printed in crayon-soft black on newsprint-weight paper — shows a aggrieved painter clutching an enormous gilt frame around a feeble still-life: a single candle, a skull, a table. His theatrical posture and extravagant hat mark him as a type Daumier perfected: the self-deluded bohemian artist. Behind him, other rejected souls haul their canvases away from the Paris Salon jury. The caption translates roughly, *'They refused that… the ignoramuses!!'* The target is the artist's wounded vanity, not the jury.
