Caricature of Four Citizens at Weapons Drill with a Soldier
Johann Heinrich Ramberg's pen sketch satirizes civic militia training in the revolutionary era. Four awkwardly armed civilians stand beside a professional soldier, their postures and proportions exaggerated to comic effect—baggy uniforms, ungainly limbs, and clumsy bearing contrast sharply with military discipline. This etching belongs to the European tradition of political caricature pioneered by Hogarth and Gillray, where social types and civic pretensions became targets of graphic wit. The subject reflects anxieties about citizen-soldiers and popular mobilization during the Napoleonic upheavals. Such prints, widely circulated as single sheets, established the satirical vocabulary—distorted anatomy, narrative grouping, social observation—that would later structure comic strips and graphic storytelling.
