Caricature of a Grinning Violinist
Franz Wacik · 1915

This pen sketch by Franz Wacik depicts a musician with exaggerated facial features—a prominent nose, sharp teeth, and slicked hair—rendered in the caricaturist's quick, energetic line. The subject wears formal concert dress with a bow tie, one hand gesturing expressively while the other presumably holds a violin. The drawing descends from centuries of European print satire: Hogarth's narrative morality plays, Gillray's political invective, and Daumier's lithographed social commentary. By 1915, such caricatures had become foundational to commercial illustration and the emerging language of comic art. The exaggerated physiognomy reflects period conventions—often freighted with ethnic or class prejudice—that caricaturists deployed to signal type and temperament to their audiences.
