Herbarium Specimen: Kohautia sp., ex Fort St. George

This pressed botanical specimen — slender-stemmed, with wiry branching habits and small opposite leaves characteristic of *Kohautia* (Rubiaceae) — was sent from Fort St. George, Madras, by Dr. Edw. Bulkley around 1700, under the vernacular name *Coru pundoo*. It is not a satirical print. The sheet belongs to the early institutional herbarium tradition that underpins Linnaean taxonomy, later formalized by Chamisso and Schlechtendal. The Royal Botanic Gardens label and color-calibration strip visible here are conservation tools. No printmaking technique applies; the scientific illustration tradition — precise, documentary, unembellished — ran parallel to Hogarth's satirical engravings and fed the same appetite for systematic visual classification of the world that eventually shaped sequential pictorial narrative.
