Prison Visit Scene from *Jack Sheppard*

George Cruikshank's steel-engraved illustration depicts a vaulted prison corridor — almost certainly Newgate — where two women in period dress press urgently against a barred grate, reaching toward a figure beyond it, while warders observe from a guardhouse further along the passage. The composition's deep perspective and arched stonework amplify claustrophobia deliberately. Cruikshank, working in the tradition running from Hogarth's *Industry and Idleness* through Rowlandson's social panoramas, used sequential narrative illustration to give popular fiction moral weight. His plate-work here — cross-hatched stone, precise costume rendering — belongs to the same visual grammar that would migrate, via cheap illustrated periodicals and the German Bilderbogen picture-sheets, directly into the comic strip: sequential images, expressive figures, architectural staging substituting for a panel border.
