An Act to Punish Drunken Men for Assaulting Women
· 1853

This wood engraving satirizes proposed legislation against drunk male violence toward women, presenting the absurdity through a courtroom scene. A disheveled man holds the bill while surrounded by jeering magistrates and onlookers—caricatured with exaggerated features typical of mid-Victorian print satire. The composition echoes Gillray and Rowlandson's tradition of social commentary through grotesque physiognomy and crowded compositional chaos. Published as part of a verse broadside attacking gin and beer sales, the print mocks both drunkenness and the inadequacy of legal remedies.
