A Scene from *Jack Sheppard*, Illustrated by George Cruikshank

Cruikshank's wood engraving depicts a prison or dungeon interior where a defiant young man—Jack Sheppard, the celebrated thieving folk-hero—confronts a cluster of officials and guards clutching halberds, while a Black figure crouches at lower right having his leg-irons struck off. Cruikshank (1792–1878), trained in the Gillray tradition of biting line-engraved satire, carries that inheritance into narrative illustration: sequential pictorial storytelling, expressive crowd physiognomy, compressed theatrical space. The *Jack Sheppard* plates are a direct genealogical link between Georgian print caricature and the comic strip—episodic images driving prose, character fixed by graphic type.
