Steel engraving by George Cruikshank illustrating Walter Scott's novel *Redgauntlet*. His career bridges Georgian political caricature — he worked alongside Gillray's legacy and later illustrated Dickens — and the sequential pictorial storytelling that would feed directly into the Victorian illustrated press and, eventually, the comic strip. No ethnic or class caricature is visible here; the register is literary illustration rather than political lampoon.
