Kuidas nad tagasi tuliwad (How They Returned)
Erik Obermann's ink drawing depicts five figures in working-class dress—laborers, a woman in traditional costume, and men in caps and vests—gathered in conversation. The caption, in Estonian, suggests a narrative about return or homecoming. This work inherits the tradition of European political and social satire established by Hogarth, Gillray, and Daumier: direct observation of ordinary people rendered through caricature and type. The figure types—the rural woman, the urban worker, the various masculine archetypes—employ visual shorthand common to 19th-century print satire and the picture-sheet tradition. The drawing style, spare and linear, anticipates the economy of line that would define early comic strips, while the grouped composition and social commentary root it firmly in the caricature lineage from which modern sequential art descended.
