City Gays in Front of Boss

Obermann, Erik · 1907

City Gays in Front of Boss
Erik Obermann's ink drawing depicts three military officers in conversation, with one figure shown from behind addressing two uniformed men wearing tall astrakhan hats and ornate Caucasian-style military dress. The composition and caricatured facial features reflect early 20th-century European satirical conventions, continuing traditions established by Gillray and Daumier. The sketch exemplifies how political and social satire, rooted in centuries of print culture, fed directly into early comic art forms that would dominate the century ahead.
