Military Officers in Conversation
Erik Obermann's hand-colored lithograph depicts two military figures in animated discussion, their exaggerated physiognomies—particularly the bearded officer's prominent features—characteristic of early-20th-century German caricature. The sharp graphic style, bold black contours, and limited palette descend from the Bilderbogen tradition and contemporary satirical illustration. The print captures a moment of military life with the pointed observation common to political and social satire of the Wilhelmine era. The artist's technique of hand-coloring lithography allowed for rapid reproduction and distribution, making such images accessible vehicles for commentary. This work exemplifies how caricature traditions from Gillray and Daumier evolved into the visual language that would inform modern comics and graphic narrative.
