Uncle Sam Strides the Pacific
Obermann, Erik · 1908

Erik Obermann's hand-colored lithograph depicts Uncle Sam as an imperial colossus, striding across the Pacific Ocean with characteristic swagger. The caricature features a sharp-faced figure with exaggerated nose and curled mustache. One hand clutches a battleship; the other gestures triumphantly. Obermann employs the visual language of nineteenth-century political satire, descended from Gillray and Daumier, where national personifications and grotesque features conveyed ideological critique. The composition echoes the Bilderbogen tradition of German popular prints—bold outlines, flattened perspective, hand-applied color. This image records a historical moment when American naval power, newly demonstrated in the Spanish-American War and symbolized by Theodore Roosevelt's Great White Fleet, shaped geopolitical imagination.
