Dawn and Twilight Pants
Obermann, Erik · 1907

Erik Obermann's hand-colored lithograph depicts two women in conversation, their contrasting dress marking a social hierarchy. The figure on the left wears a printed cotton skirt and quilted jacket; the woman on the right displays refined white undergarments and dark skirt. Below, handwritten text in German suggests commentary on class distinctions and feminine propriety. This work exemplifies early twentieth-century European comic illustration, rooted in the caricature and satirical print traditions of Hogarth and Daumier. The informal medium and domestic subject matter anticipate the visual language of early comic strips, while Obermann's sharp observation captures a moment of industrial-era class tension through humor.
