Karikatuuri visand (Caricature Sketch)

Triik, Nikolai · 1911

Karikatuuri visand (Caricature Sketch)
Nikolai Triik's pen sketch captures a rowdy tavern or music hall scene, with corpulent, exaggerated figures dancing and carousing while onlookers gesture from raised platforms. The heavy outlines and distorted anatomy follow European traditions of social satire—from Hogarth's moral narratives through Daumier's class commentary to the Germanic Bilderbogen broadsheets. Triik's caricatural style, emphasizing bodily excess and crude physicality, mocks lower-class excess and behavior with the ethnic and social prejudices common to early 20th-century Baltic art. The sketch format itself—loose, unfinished—suggests preliminary study for a print or illustration, showing how caricature's genealogy connects fine-art satire to the emerging comic strip form.
