Kaks tüüpi (Two Types)
Obermann, Erik · 1906

This pen-and-ink drawing depicts two Estonian men in a rural setting, rendered in the exaggerated caricature style descended from 19th-century European satire traditions. The figures' facial features and body types are emphasized through distortion—a technique inherited from Gillray, Rowlandson, and Daumier. Heavy cross-hatching and bold outlines create the linear vocabulary that would define early comic illustration. The image sits at the intersection of folk caricature and modernizing media, showing how comic art evolved from satirical engravings into sequential narrative forms.
