Pair of Breeches

Johan Herman · 1658

Pair of Breeches
These black silk breeches with grid patterning represent 17th-century menswear during a period of significant social upheaval in Northern Europe. The garment's construction—gathered at waist and knee—reflects the fashion of the Dutch Golden Age and the English Commonwealth era. Such fine silk imports marked wealth and status during an period when rigid sumptuary laws governed dress by class. The grid pattern, achieved through weaving technique rather than printing, demonstrates the textile innovations of Dutch and English manufacture. While primarily functional dress, such garments carried political meaning: choices in fabric, cut, and ornamentation signaled allegiance during the English Civil War and Restoration. This piece survives as material evidence of how ordinary clothing encoded the social hierarchies and commercial networks of its time.
