Sketchbook: Vevey
George Elbert Burr's travel sketchbook from Vevey, Switzerland documents the artist's careful observation of landscape and atmosphere. Working in graphite, Burr captures subtle variations in light and water, employing loose hatching and restrained linework characteristic of late nineteenth-century plein air practice. These pages reveal the working methods of an artist trained in both fine art and commercial illustration—disciplines that increasingly overlapped as newspaper and magazine demand for skilled draftsmen shaped American visual culture. Burr's precise hand would later inform his etchings and landscape paintings, establishing him as a significant figure in American printmaking of the Southwest.
