Untitled (Old Bridge over Mosel)
George Elbert Burr's pen-and-ink sketch depicts a European riverside town dominated by a multi-arched stone bridge and fortified tower. The composition balances architectural detail with atmospheric landscape: hatched foreground buildings frame the scene while lighter cloud work recedes into distance. Burr's line work reveals influence from both topographical tradition and emerging modernist economy. The artist, who spent his career alternating between Ohio and Arizona, produced etchings and sketches that brought careful observation to modest architectural subjects—a practice connecting nineteenth-century printmaking to early twentieth-century artistic practice.
