Bacchanale Revel, Pan and Procession
Louis Schaettle's classical fantasy procession depicts mythological figures in dynamic movement across a single panoramic composition. Pan plays pipes center-stage while robed attendants, cherubs, and draped maidens dance and process through a flowering landscape. Rendered in watercolor with decorative border ornament, the image reflects early 20th-century trends in decorative illustration and classical subject matter. Schaettle (1867–1917), a Chicago-born artist, worked across commercial and fine art contexts during a period when such mythological scenes appeared in theatrical design, periodical illustration, and applied decoration—visual traditions feeding into the developing language of sequential narrative art.
