Portrait Study of a Bearded Man in Turban
Alice Pike Barney's portrait study depicts a turbaned figure with full beard, rendered in oil or pastel on tan paper. The artist employs loose, gestural brushwork to model the face's planes while leaving the background neutral. A separate study of clasped hands appears below—a compositional technique common in academic practice. Barney, a Cincinnati-born artist who spent much of her career abroad, combined Orientalist subject matter with modernist handling, bridging nineteenth-century academic portraiture and twentieth-century artistic innovation. The work exemplifies the artist's interest in documenting diverse figures encountered during her travels in Europe and the Middle East.
