In Camp on Soda Butte Creek, Cook City
Thomas Moran's pencil sketch captures a mountainous landscape with geological detail characteristic of his work as a visual documentarian of the American West. The drawing demonstrates Moran's approach to topographical study—layered hatching conveys rocky terrain and elevation, while the composition establishes spatial recession from foreground to distant peaks. Born in England in 1837, Moran became instrumental in shaping nineteenth-century perceptions of Western geography through his paintings and sketches, which informed both scientific expeditions and popular understanding of American landscapes. This study, executed during field work near Yellowstone, reflects the artist's method of translating observed geography into finished works.
