Maiden Chased by a Satyr
William Hunt Diederich, American, b. Hungary, 1884–1953 · ca. 1915

This pen sketch by sculptor and illustrator William Hunt Diederich captures a classical mythology scene rendered in a modernist linear style. The composition shows dynamic movement across the page—a fleeing female figure pursued by a horned satyr, their bodies caught mid-motion in fluid, economical lines. The drawing exemplifies early twentieth-century illustration technique, where pen work alone conveyed narrative action and anatomical form. Diederich's approach reflects broader currents in comic art and sequential illustration of the era, when artists developed visual shorthand to convey speed, gesture, and emotion through minimal linework, establishing visual conventions that would shape newspaper comics and early comic strips.
