Thimbleberry

Elizabeth C. Field · 1860

Thimbleberry
This hand-colored botanical illustration by Elizabeth C. Field depicts thimbleberry (*Rubus parviflorus*) with characteristic magenta flowers and deeply lobed leaves. Field, a naturalist and illustrator, managed the Sydney Botanic Garden's design and operations for years before her work was adopted by The Cooper Institute in London. Her scientific approach to plant documentation—precise detail combined with artistic composition—exemplifies nineteenth-century natural history illustration, a visual tradition predating modern comic art but sharing its careful attention to recurring visual elements and sequential botanical study.
