Fashion Plate from Le Moniteur de la Mode
E. Cheffen, French, active 19th c. · 1884

This hand-colored engraving depicts an elegant autumn scene with a fashionable woman and three children in period dress. The woman, wearing a striking red jacket and feathered hat, instructs the children on proper deportment and style. Published in Le Moniteur de la Mode, a leading French fashion journal, this plate served as both documentation and aspiration for its educated readership. The composition—with its careful attention to fabric texture, trim details, and social hierarchy—exemplifies 19th-century fashion illustration at its height. Such publications functioned as visual newspapers for the middle and upper classes, using narrative scenes to present seasonal trends and social conventions through the language of refined leisure.
